UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day, 23 April 2016

Author: Christina - Published 2016-04-08 15:14 - (4533 Reads)

"Literacy is the door to knowledge, essential to individual self-esteem and empowerment. Books, in all forms, play an essential role here." Irina Bokova, Director General, UNESCO

23 April is a symbolic date for world literature. It is on this date that the birth and deaths occurred of prominent authors. (Shakespeare, Cervantes, et al.) It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.

In this regard, UNESCO created World Book and Copyright Day.

The Advisory Board and Friends of the Library representatives will be giving out roses on that day.

News Article on ICN The Concordian by Ellen Reid

Author: Christina - Published 2016-01-26 23:26 - (12695 Reads)
Anyone who has tried to get published, or researched the logistics of it, comprehends the immense and frequent hurdles: the time-consuming (and costly) sending of manuscripts (and many large houses will only work through literary agents), the soul-destroying letters of refusal, and the barriers of the many literary prizes only open to published writers. And once your precious book has been accepted, how much editorial control is left to the author?

Patience is a virtue on the road to self-publishing, by Dahlia Liwsze

The road to becoming a published writer is long and challenging. Writing your book is the easy part. Publishing it, on the other hand, is not so easy. Not only do you have to research publishing houses, but you also have to experience rejection until your book is accepted. And of course, one must also endure the torment of wondering if anyone will ever accept it.

Raindrops Glimpses Moments

An Unconventional Memoir of an Unplanned Journey

If, according to Socrates, the unexamined life is not worth living, is the converse always true? When a person has actively embraced life, living it to the fullest, is there time for philosophical musings, looking backward, contemplating the meaning, and sharing with generations to come? The answer is yes, as the new memoir, Raindrops Glimpses Moments clearly demonstrates. With the same exuberant energy that supported Len Richman in his worldwide travels, academic pursuits, friendships, and family life, the author reflects and shares his personal examination of his life and the lives that have touched his...

“That’s where they burn red-haired girls as witches,” Maya’s mother said as they stood staring at the heavy metal door of an ominous bunker on their way to kindergarten. This streak of madness starts Maya’s odyssey – from war and betrayal in Germany of the late 1940s to adventure in Africa in the 1960s...

THE SANDS OF TIME

by Barbara Silverman

Readings, Discussions, Stories on Mythology, History, Astronomy, Wildlife

Time is like grains of sand. It obscures the past, confusing the history that we try to unravel. Presenting puzzles and forming mysteries that may or may not be solved. Sometimes the sand is visible, covering and hiding that which lies beneath. Sometimes the sand cannot be seen – it is simply the passage of time, forever carrying away pieces that we search for. And when the sands of time flow into the future, past that hidden veil preventing us from seeing beyond this moment, what will they carry with them. What from our time will remain? And what will be gone forever? That question is still to be answered.

Twelfth Night: Or What You Will

Known to many as one of Shakespeare’s most perfect comedies, Twelfth Night is a wild and touching story of a set of separate twins desperate to find their other half. Shakespeare’s stirring and memorable language is masterfully paired with hilarious physical and visual comedy, inciting tears and laughter in equal measure and sometimes simultaneously. This play deals with the nature of love and loss, asking intriguing questions about gender roles, identity and attraction. Timeless and thought provoking, Twelfth Night is the perfect play for inspiring dialogue amongst our contemporary audience.

A Birthday Wish-list for ICN

Our ‘Indie’ Movement
The ‘big bang’ that sparked our existence occurred on April first—April Fool’s Day—2001. We were a ‘gang of four’ enthusiasts who got together at the (now disappeared) Café ‘Porté Disparu’ on the Plateau. Our mission was a bit vague, but we did agree on one thing: to reach out to emerging and actual self-publishers in Montreal. Back then, we had no idea how much our nascent venture was destined to grow...
