Find me a primitive man
Visiting from the UK, Marysia brings a suitcase full of ‘royal’ jokes, risqué anecdotes and ditsy lamentations on her quest to find true romance abroad. Her ‘Piaf’ re-creations are atmospheric and heartfelt, but the mood and tone of the performance switches as erratically as the English weather from juvenile to bland, distracted to disjointed, romantic to ribald, which is fine as long as it’s subtle or witty. Sadly, the celebrated British wit falls short of its potential this time around. Marysia is both attractive and engaging, and she would do well to ditch the distracting bagful of props and cease disappearing behind the stage curtains at odd moments and focus instead on staying in touch with her audience, which (with more thoughtful content, smoother transitions and polish) she could succeed in doing. In any case, welcome to Montreal, Marysia, we hope you enjoy your stay.
