A Company of Fools
Who dares clown around in the company of such foolish freaks?

RICHARD III in BOUFFON

for 4 NIGHTS ONLY at MainLine THEATRE

A Company of Fools presents RICHARD III in Bouffon with MainLine Theatre February 20 – 23 at 8pm, at MainLine Theatre, 3997 St-Laurent Blvd. Shakespeare's Richard III as performed by Ottawa's A Company of Fools is so audacious and salacious that it will leave you gasping at its originality and offensiveness... mayhem... finely spoken Shakespeare... a lot of humour... the edgiest theatre in Ottawa." ~ Catherine Lawson, Ottawa Citizen.

Tickets are $17 or $12 with your FourPlay Card.

A midwinter’s hallucinogenic dream: farce, folly and the full moon

Perhaps it had something to do with the perfectly full moon, which was eclipsed to blood red by February 20th at ten of the clock. That might partly account for the hallucinogenic Shakespearean capers on the Mainline stage. If the old Bard wasn’t turning in his grave, he might have died a second time from laughing—or groaning. Is nothing sacred in the Kingdom of ART?

A Valentine Affair
Just in time for Valentine’s day, the intimate Geordie Theatre space in the heart of the Plateau offers up a funky stage setting created by Jennifer Sheshko. The action is enlivened by Tristan Capacchione’s dynamic sound design and the masterly shifting light effects of Chris O’Neill. Tableau d’Hôte’s most recent theatrical presentation, ‘The Elusive,’ begins with these stage-lights trained on a hermetic foursome of would-be lovers, poised to embark on a typically modern-day courtship ritual and battle dance...

Last week, I spent an hour or so at a local retirement home. Not something I often do, but for the novelty—this was a magically conjured ‘home for the aged,’ briefly claiming centre stage at Centaur Theatre. Some challenge! you may be thinking. I agree. Playwright, John Mighton has trained his dramatic focus on a mostly neglected theatrical theme: that twilit stage of life we are all rapidly or gradually approaching, nothing we might normally care to dwell on, I have to say...

A MainLine Theatre Production

Does the name ‘Hedda Gabler’ conjure up foggy recollections of rampant heroines, stylized fire-arms, sloppy college crib-notes on mystery and murder? This month, Montreal’s Mainline Theatre offers a modernist look at the classic Ibsen drama, fast-forwarded to 1950s suburbia...

HOW TO BE A CLIMATE HERO

by Audrey Schulman

One afternoon last summer, I was on a commuter train when I heard someone yelling behind me. I didn’t pay attention because I was breaking up a fight between my kids. I figured the noise was from some college students having fun. The third time the person yelled, I turned around.

It was a boy, about six years old. He was standing on his seat, screaming, “My mom’s having a seizure.” The only part of his mom I could see were her legs sticking out into the aisle, convulsing.

And arrayed around the train car, staring, were 40 other people, mouths open. Not one of them doing a thing...

Charles Dickens revisited

It’s a curious thing to witness a fresh ‘take’ on, not an old but a revered theme, when a beloved classic—nostalgic Victoriana, no less—has already been immortalized on the silver screen, plus any number of contemporary ‘re-makes’ treading the same hallowed ground.

This time, the stage-setting at MSOPA is a darkened space with antique décor: the armchair, the candle-lights and drapery, the gold lettered shop-front of Marley and Scrooge. Fanciful props, costumes and disguisements are impressively crafted, with the occasional whimsical burlesque...

Back to the Future with Ibsen: Environmental Prophet

The stage-setting for Ibsen’s play is classic austerity, monotone elegance, the ‘epic’ gravitas of impending doom. This is hardly a bland 'feel good' piece of theatre, but instead a profound, demanding, thoughtful and curative tonic, a grand dose of ‘back to the future’ flavoured with ‘shock& awe’...
