Founded in 2008, The Freestanding Room is a theatre co-op made up of actors, writers, directors, and producers who believe that big things can happen in small places. They like a good story and the chance to tell it fast and easy. Together they tend the Freestanding Room, an intimate space used to sharpen their tools, corral their ideas, spin their yarns, and, sooner rather than later, to invite everyone hungry for a tale told simply and authentically to come sit around their fire. The Freestanding Room is at 4324 St-Laurent, 3rd Floor, in Montreal.

by Vincenzo Di NicolaVincenzo Di Nicola’s poetry is fusion of feeling and intellect, a tryst between image and idea. It’s also distinctive for the clarity and lucidity of its language: the musicality of words on a page—and on the tongue—by which the poet gives shape and voice to an intricate spiral of thoughts and emotions. The Unsecured Present, this innovative blend of ‘pomes’ and prose, is a meditative journey from remembrance to discovery, Christina Manolescu, publisher and founder of "Invisible Cities Network," Montreal

"After Fernando," the opening novella of "The Unsecured Present," resonates with the provoking bipolarity of memory - that memory is a betrayal: When you try to remember, you have to betray either the person you were or the person you've become...

Presenting: The Dining Room, by Dramatis Personae, May 5, 6, 13, 2012
- Published 2012-04-28 16:39 - (3846 Reads)The Dining Room
The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The action is a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids.
Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother's infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn't recognize her own sons at Thanksgiving dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc.
Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.
