In any of the stories, please either write about your own experience working in Africa or speak to someone who has previously been there or get in contact with someone there at the current time.
- Broadcast and print: how are these mediums being used as a tool for social change in Africa, or alternatively how are they used here in Canada to educate about the issues in Africa ( i.e. docs, etc)
- In Canada, are there diverse media outlets that have a focus on African issues (such as a special section in a newspaper, a radio show, etc.) Identify and write about them.
- ( How does the Canadian media cover African issues? In what context is it covered? Do we hear mainly positive or negative news? Identify some and discuss what has been covered in the past.
- Environmental issues: identify specific projects in Canada that are helping to educate and spread awareness pertaining to the environment in different African countries.
- Photography: How does the influence of the published photos that we see coming out of Africa inspire us to create different actions or become active in Canada?
- Send us your photos / create a photo essay of past travels to Africa ( high res please!)
- Interview a journalist who has been to Africa and find out about their work ethic, how they were desensitized
- Feature article on Journalists for Human Rights
- Jailed journalists in Africa: go into detail about certain ones and talk about their rights and freedoms or lack thereof
- Feature article on various media outlets or one specific in Africa (i.e. The Vision, newspaper in Ghana)
- Article on publications devoted to covering African issues, such as Baobab Magazine in Montreal (www.baobabmagazine.com)
- Student initiatives geared toward African issues: sending people abroad on university volunteer missions, campus events
- Other Canadian initiatives/projects helping to improve human rights in Africa (profile one or a few of these)
- Profiles on countries where JHR has programs: Benin, Cote D'Ivoire, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda or another country of your choice
- Write about your personal experience on one of the volunteer missions through CUVAP or the GFIC (or other Uganda – specific programs). How did it change you, what was your job there, culture shock, what was it really like compared to what we hear back in Canada? Does the media oversex the country's problems?
