Featured at the launch will be singer-songwriter Coral Egan, Amanda Mabro and The Cabaret Band, the instrumental pop quintet Sweet Mother Logic and folk rock group The Darling DeMaes.
An independent review of the arts, the Rover offers a near-daily postings of short reviews, ranging freely through film, theatre, art, TV, books, music and special events. Its mission is to track down the new and noteworthy from the cultural offerings available to Montrealers. “Of necessity, coverage is select, but, I hope, passionate,” says Ackerman, a former theatre critic, turned playwright and novelist. “Our modest goal so far is to offer a taste of what’s out there, and to develop critical voices. Having worked in the arts and as an arts journalist, I’m concerned by the decline of professional criticism. Too many creators are working in a vacuum with only their friends to offer feedback. The dangers are twofold: much good work goes unsung, and mediocrity persists, feeding on self-congratulation.”
Rover’s literary editor is Elise Moser, a writer with many years' diverse experience in the Canadian book world. Her mandate is to offer an eclectic lineup of Montreal and international titles from the current season. Says Moser, "Just at the moment when book reviews are being cut from print publications all around us, the Rover is expanding the visibility of literary culture with thoughtful critiques by engaged writers.”
The magazine hopes to attract revenues through advertising and the sale of memberships, a concept Ackerman plans to introduce at the launch. “Montreal is enjoying an incredibly creative period. It would be a shame if this era of artistic abundance did not receive the critical reverberation it deserves.”
The Rover launch is held at Sala Rossa, 4848 St. Laurent Blvd. Thursday, Nov 27, 8:30 pm. General admission is $10. Memberships $30 (includes admission). Tickets can be purchased on the Rover site at www.roverarts.com.
