“This play is based primarily on the life story of one of the youth I work with. When I heard what he had been through, I knew we had to tell this story,” Jesse says. So the filmmaker brought together a team of special needs youth and began working. The result is a dramatization of a life shattered by misunderstanding and pain, but, ultimately, rebuilt by truth and co-operation.

“We begin in a mental institution, but what’s different, is that we have a patient who should NOT be here. Though she exhibits all the signs of a deeply troubled individual, the reasons for her disorders are not based in her psyche, but based on external pressures that no one knows about.”

So she is a mystery, a mystery that her fellow patient sets out to unravel. Though the story is not a retelling, but rather a creative dramatization of real life, it is a humorous, powerful and moving testament to the courage of the individual in the face of a society that is too quick to judge and sometimes forgets to treat its more vulnerable members as individuals.
