SPOTS OF TIME, performing 11 June - 20 June, FRINGE FEST 2010

Author: Christina - Published 2010-06-10 22:31 - (3470 Reads)

Lost love, ruined lives, and run-of-the-mill dementia...and there’s a twist — it’s funny! Spots of Time is a tragicomedy that delves into the mind of an ageing professor haunted by his past. Visions of his younger self lead him deeper down the rabbit hole, unraveling the threads of his sanity. Spots of Time is a unique production that spans generations with a cast and crew ranging from teens to seniors. Through it all they have developed a bond of friendship, trust and understanding that belies a 50 year age gap to produce theatre magic. The members of this production have a genuine passion for the arts, and isn’t that what The Montreal 2010 Fringe Festival is all about?

Festival St-Ambroise Fringe de Montréal and Random Thread Works present:

HOT PINK

Meet eighteen year-old Lindi: orphan, runaway, hermit. She lives in a cave on the edge of town, barely surviving on a steady diet of coffee, insomnia and denial. She’ll spin you tales of utopia on a dust particle, of love shattered like broken glass and of her alternate self, in the wee hours of the morning during a passing storm. What at first appears to be the ideal escape is ruptured when the frightening truth behind Lindi’s dream world comes to light. With only a teddy bear, a book and the voices in her head to give her strength, Lindi must face the music or spiral deeper into madness. A dark comedy disguised as an ode to lost souls, Hot Pink will tickle your inner child…

Introducing, 'No small potatoes: A Journey ', by Elizabeth Johnston

Author: Christina - Published 2010-06-10 22:28 - (2851 Reads)

No Small Potatoes: A Journey

A book about food safety told through personal narratives so that complicated issues are made easier to understand and apply to one's own life.

I never thought a book about potatoes could be so interesting and informative. The story (and this does read as a story) about the history and exploitation of potato farming left me stunned. Its scope goes far beyond the potato. It sheds light on modern farming and the dangers of capitalism when money is more important than the well being of communities.

Africville, Nova Scotia, built over generations, destroyed in one day. This Governor General Award nominated play will be a staged reading by professional actors. Africville, situated in Halifax’s north end peninsular – First settled by Black refuges of the war of 1812 - became the home of Halifax’s Black community well into the 1950’s. Denied the basic amenities such as water, power and sanitation, it was still home until the bulldozers arrived and the residents were relocated to public housing. Consecrated Ground exposes the tragedy of Africville in the 1960s, which still resonates with the people of Halifax today. George Boyd, one of Canada’s great story tellers, paints a rich, human portrait of a family and a community fighting for their place in a world constantly looking to evict them.

Introducing the novel, THE EXPATRIATE, by Jeannette Moscovitch, Culturama Press

Author: Christina - Published 2010-04-28 19:00 - (8892 Reads)
Fleeing Germany after the collapse of the Third Reich, two German citizens become friends when they meet on a trans-Atlantic crossing. Both disembark at Halifax and promise to communicate with each other by whatever means possible.

Hermann Baumbach flies from Halifax to Calgary to establish a branch of his father’s business. Hermann, his sisters and parents had escaped just before the War from Frankfurt to Tel Aviv, Palestine.

His friend, Captain Janos von Heissel, born in Düsseldorf, a staunch Nazi, is being sought for War Crimes by the Nuremberg Court. To escape, he disguises himself and adopts the identity of a Jewish Düsseldorfer, Jaakob Kesselmann, which qualifies him for a permanent visa to Argentina where Nazis and Jews with capital are welcome. The Captain is always on guard to conceal his true identity which haunts him all his life, while a silent nemesis lies in wait for him.

This epic reveals the struggle to survive in a culture of upheaval, which is the central issue of our times: the impact of war and corruption upon the ordinary citizen who must live in a spiritually ruined world.
