Dangerous Liaisons

By Christopher Hampton
Directed by Alexandre Marine
September 7-28, 2008

As overheard in various salons and bedrooms... Valmont: “I want the excitement of watching her betray everything that’s most important to her. I thought betrayal was your favourite word.” Merteuil: “No, no, cruelty. I always think that has a nobler ring to it.”

The Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre kicks off a sizzling season of passion and seduction with Dangerous Liaisons, Christopher Hampton’s adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 French novel about lust, greed, deception and romance. Don’t miss what promises to be an exciting production, led by award-winning director, Alexandre Marine and featuring a handpicked, mostly Montreal cast of 16...From Left: Catherine de Sève (as La Marquise de Merteuil) and Brett Christopher (as Le Vicomte de Valmont) sizzle in Dangerous Liaisons. The photographer is Randy Cole.

The battle of the sexes; love and war: such age-old clichés take on a rapier-sharp glitter in Segal Centre’s debut theatre piece of the season: Dangerous Liaisons. It’s a dramatization of a novel by ex-soldier, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, first published seven years before the French revolution...

Oooo! at the Segal Centre Studio Theatre, September 13 – 21, 2008

SIDEMART Theatrical Grocery
Is thrilled to announce the English Language World Premiere of

Oooo!

by Gerard Vàzquez
translated by Elisabet Ràfols and Michael Bantjes
directed by Andrew Shaver
Oooo! is a touching and powerful comedy about the lives of a group of clowns in Nazi Germany. Charlie Rivel, the most tender of clowns, is forced to perform for Hitler, the most barbaric of dictators. Can art be guiltless? Does it have to submit to power? Can an artist remain apolitical in the midst of political chaos?...

NINE DAYS ONLY
SEPTEMBER 13 – 21, 2008
This dramatization is inspired by, and at least partially based on, historic fact. A troupe of clowns performing in Nazi Germany are graciously invited (read politely coerced) into entertaining the 'great' Führer, Adolf Hitler himself. The tight, focused dialogue sets the scene and immediately localizes the action in Berlin during the declining years of World War II...

Hurry! The current production of ‘The Wise Men of Chelm,’ in Yiddish, wraps up the summer theatre season at the Segal Centre for the Performing Arts. The performance is for everyone: as in previous Yiddish-speaking productions, instantaneous supertitles in French and English are provided overhead.

Meanwhile, as you’d expect, the backdrop to the story resembles the ever-constant ‘Shtetl’, but this time it’s situated on some mythic mountainside where God's angel mistakenly dropped a sackful of foolishness over the inhabitants of a remote town. It’s a tale in which Yiddish tradition finds ample scope for its classic self-deprecating humour; witness the term for dolt or bungler, the inverse hero or the ‘schlemiel...’

BEST OF THE FRINGE PICKS 2008

The Tricky Part
Image A true story by playwright, Martin Moran. Actor, Peter Hayes, of Hearts and Eyes Collective revisits the memories of a childhood interrupted; it's a story told with sensitivity, artistry, wisdom and astonishing candour. An oft travelled and roundabout journey of guilt, remorse, blame and forgiveness, painstakingly nuanced in its recollections. A one-of-a-kind performance. http://www.montrealfringe.ca/en/spectacles/the-tricky-part

Performance by jem rolls:
HOW I STOPPED WORRYING AND LEARNT TO LOVE THE MALL
Image This is British wit in a class all its own! A poetic and philosophical cosmic rant, taking in this century’s consumer culture, the environment, poverty and affluence, supermarket queues, consumer packaging, sliced bread, big box stores, God and/or the absence of, the evolution and fate of the human race…and of the planet. Jem Rolls scrutinizes what is most simple and mundane, and from it he excavates a universe.

BETWEEN TAKEOFF AND LANDING
Image Michael Walsh was on his way home to New York City when his plane was rerouted to Gander, Newfoundland on September 11, 2001. In a performance that’s riveting as well as entertaining, he offers a moment-by-moment recollection of the ‘backstory’ to those momentous few days. Walsh is a great impersonator of the people he met during that time ‘in between.’ It’s a page in history, recreated as personal and collective theatre. http://montrealfringe.ca/en/spectacles/between-takeoff-and-landing

'BETH
Image
A modern-day mirror-image remake of Shakespeare’s classic, Macbeth. Superbly acted, full of suspense, mystery and intrigue. http://www.montrealfringe.ca/en/spectacles/beth

THIS HOUR HAS 88 YEARS
Image A retrospective speed trip through the 20th century and millennium, narrated via story, dance and song. Sizzling with energy; clever, inventive, entertaining and moving, as well as being absolutely hilarious. Jam-packed with anecdotal snippets of history and popular culture. A great collaborative performance from a super talented cast! http://montrealfringe.ca/en/spectacles/this-hour-has-88-years

Fringe Festival Notables

I don’t know where here is
Image Jessica Rose portrays a mentally and physically infirm young woman whose mind is brilliant and delusional, lucid and cunning. She has an innate sense of what is ‘normal’ and also the tragic conviction that this desired state of ‘normal’ is never to be hers. In a forceful and dynamic performance, she acts out the abject helplessness and conscious tyranny of the invalid. It's an intelligent and witty script, conscious of its own sustained cleverness: a verbal roller coaster and exhaustive journey through the agonies of the heart and lost labyrinth of the mind. http://montrealfringe.ca/en/spectacles/i-dont-know-where-here-is

Songs of an immigrant in Paris
Image This is a soulful evocation of Paris, tasteful, sober, elegant and spare. Marni Rice exhibits a masterly command of languages, accents and astute impersonations: Portuguese immigrants, Russian exiles, and native Parisians with guttural tones and rough-diamond manners. In this performance, choreographed transitions lead smoothly from scene to scene and from song to song. Although a native New Yorker, Rice definitely looks the part of the quintessential ‘gamin de Paris.’ In character, of course, she wields a marvellous accordion with mother-of-pearl glittering keys. Gifted with a textured, flexible and evocative voice, Rice interprets songs that are both obscure and familiar, tragic, romantic and uplifting: as she says, in homage to her years spent living in Paris. Rice’s recurring narrative is the soul-immigrant’s quest for a place to be, to become, to connect and to settle: the cosmic quest of the century, given the migration of populations world wide. http://montrealfringe.ca/en/spectacles/songs-immigrant-tales-parischansons-d%E2%80%99une-immigree-contes-de-paris

Fringe Fest 'asides' Montreal 2008

Author: Christina - Published 2008-06-21 12:53 - (2860 Reads)
Find me a primitive man
Image Visiting from the UK, Marysia brings a suitcase full of ‘royal’ jokes, risqué anecdotes and ditsy lamentations on her quest to find true romance abroad. Her ‘Piaf’ re-creations are atmospheric and heartfelt, but the mood and tone of the performance switches as erratically as the English weather from juvenile to bland, distracted to disjointed, romantic to ribald, which is fine as long as it’s subtle or witty. Sadly, the celebrated British wit falls short of its potential this time around. Marysia is both attractive and engaging, and she would do well to ditch the distracting bagful of props and cease disappearing behind the stage curtains at odd moments and focus instead on staying in touch with her audience, which (with more thoughtful content, smoother transitions and polish) she could succeed in doing. In any case, welcome to Montreal, Marysia, we hope you enjoy your stay.
