COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET FESTIVAL

COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET is a festival dedicated to secret talents that are ready to be unveiled. The festival is founded by established actor Carlo Alacchi, who, upon opening a closet at his mother's house, discovered 20 years worth of paintings, scripts, music, film, and his dance shoes; he decided to create a festival for others like himself. The festival encompasses five events: Art Exhibits of paintings by artists who have never shown their work publically, an a-typical Cabaret featuring presenters of lifelong passions, a Screening in collaboration with Cine-Asie's short film contest, Portraiture, and which will include Incubatio starring Ellen David, a night of audience driven theatre with Playback Theatre, and gad, a play by Carlo Alacchi...

MONTREAL April 2008- The Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre and Delmar Customs Brokers Ltd. are delighted to present this classic Neil Simon comedy after such a long, hard and 'unfunny' winter. With director Diana Leblanc (recently at the Segal for Rose and Fallen Angel) leading a great cast featuring Rod Beattie and John Evans, The Odd Couple will surely have you laughing and holding your sides from Simon’s one of a kind humour.

Shadow-side to the swinging ’sixties

Where has the time gone? Does this vintage comedy by Neil Simon actually hark back more than 4 decades, as the first ‘Baby Boomers’ were coming of age? Who hasn’t a unique story about the room-mate from hell? And who amongst us, d’une certaine âge, hasn’t retained diffuse ’sixties era memories of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon hilariously portraying a couple of mismatched male divorcés, living ‘too close and personal’ for each other’s taste?

"Widow and ex-lover thrown together in Fishbane's latest offering"
Joel Fishbane, one of Montreal's "lions of indie theatre" (Gazette), is set to premiere his first original play in nearly three years. A two-woman drama pitting Stefanie Buxton against Stéphanie Breton, the production will be remembered for dextrous and touching performances by two of the city's most capable actresses of an original script worthy of their talents.

The intriguing title ‘Short Story Long’ conjures up the notion of the literary life. It’s a seriously comedic play about love, literature and legacy, as well as a probe through layers of deception to reach a core of truth. A sort of peeled onionskin exposé, with a touch of the classic detective novelette.

By Michel Tremblay
Translated by John Van Burek & Bill Glassco
Directed by Sarah Garton Stanley

First staged at Montreal’s Théâtre Quat’Sous in 1971, Forever Yours, Marie-Lou, is one of the great Michel Tremblay plays never before staged in English in Montreal. Set in the early 1970’s when The Main (St. Laurent Blvd.) was electric with an exotic nightlife frequented by a Quebec population at an historical crossroads, this potent play strikes at the heart of an unforgettable, dysfunctional Québecois family...

Well, not surprisingly, Tremblay’s classic theatre piece has opened amid a buzz of excitement at the Centaur Theatre. This early 1970s drama by Quebec’s esteemed francophone playwright is being staged, for the first time, in a naturalistic type of colloquial English translation...

by Morris Panych.
Presented by Tableau d'Hôte

Returning to the theatre for this first time since February, when they produced the inaugural run of Mike Czuba’s The Elusive, Tableau D’Hôte is excited to be closing its third season of great Canadian theatre with a play for all seasons: Morris Panych’s 7 Stories. As adaptable and timeless a work as exists in the contemporary Canadian canon, 7 Stories is first and foremost a play about people and the choices they make, whether or not those choices are advisable, or even explicable. Exploring the lives of people who live on their own terms, and one man who wants no part of such a universe, Panych’s work is an interesting meditation on the oddities and idiosyncrasies that make each and every person we meet completely captivating and uniquely bizarre.

I made my way down to Mainline Theatre on opening night in some trepidation. A graphic tale of wife battering—the kick-off incident of the evening—I presume I’m not alone in preferring to avert my gaze, flip over the page, turn away. So then imagine my surprise at discovering how compelling and engrossing this drama, A Lie of the Mind, actually is! And the familial constellation of actors—bar none—acting in concert, managed to bring it off to an unequivocal success!

It would be an understatement to describe ‘Blood claat’ (Blood cloth) as a high-octane production, a charged theatrical performance that spirals on a continuous ‘high.’ It’s also a culturally rich, intense and evocative speed-trip through Jamaican-African legend and history, with all its vitality and energy, as well as the indelible shadow of oppression and slavery...

In the midst of their rapturous affair, the woman, Maddy Heisler, suddenly departs for England never to see the youthful Jacob again. Years later, a mysterious young woman arrives in the area and encounters the now aging, Jacob. She carries with her a small notebook, the contents of which open an unexpected door to the past. Secrets and lies, lovers and spies, Jacob will never be the same again.

Modern-day Persephone myth revisits Mainline Theatre

No mere chance that mother, Thelma (Sandy Ferguson), dresses in vibrant red silk slippers and house-coat, whereas daughter, Jessie (Alexandra Valassis), wraps herself in some shapeless loose-fitting grey. On this fateful evening, the overt contrast between mother and daughter only intensifies as the moments tick away, dispassionately recorded by the old-fashioned clock, hooked to the kitchen door...

This is a theatrical experience that I believe may define the term ‘edgy.’ Edgier than edgy. It’s a self-perpetuating stream of raw, intimate exchanges—morphing into an exposé. A dual and duplicitous life story. The narrative action is accentuated at key moments by stage-lighting that is awesome and quite eerie in its effect.....

One-woman masquerade

If you’ve ever been around adolescents, you’re bound to recognize Claudia, the mystery persona behind a deliberately goofy masque. Michelle Polak’s live traveling portrait of a 12-year-old schoolgirl is absolutely real, as well as being a hilarious theatrical ‘send-up’ of every quirky mannerism and expression you’ve ever witnessed amongst the youth...
