Ireland’s Own Carmel O’Reilly Tonite! Theatre Ste.Catherine, March 4-9, 2008

Author: Christina - Published 2008-03-01 08:51 - (2580 Reads)
Kick off Montreal’s Irish season with the irrepressible Carmel O’Reilly
Derry Queen
Presents

Ireland’s Own Carmel O’Reilly Tonite!

A new play by Colleen Curran
Directed by Corey Castle
Tuesday, March 4 – Sunday, March 9

Seven shows only

Don’t miss this big Irish party in a little black box. Ireland’s Own Carmel O’Reilly Tonite! is Colleen Curran's rollicking new comedy with music, from March 4 to 9, playing at Theatre Ste. Catherine..

For everyone with even the shred of an Irish soul, this performance is for you.

To begin with there are melodies from the immortal ‘Riverdance’ to put you in the mood, surrounded by Theatre Ste-Catherine’s box-theatre ‘ambiance’, excellent acoustics and stylish exposed brick and beams. ‘I laughed till I cried,’ I heard from amongst the audience at the close of the show. Not surprising! Author and actress, Colleen Curran’s word-song creations, which she personally portrays on stage, are hilarious, dramatic, swift-changing as well as touching. The rich intelligent script, stuffed with typical and obscure Irish lingo, habits and mannerisms, glides fluidly from story to song, jigging, tap-dancing and crashing along, without a moment’s respite for the performer and her singing/musical accompanist, fellow-comedian boyo brother Michael (Glenn Roy)...

Relative Good, at Centaur Theatre, FEBRUARY 26 – MARCH 30, 2008

RELATIVE GOOD

WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY DAVID GOW
STARRING:
Don Anderson, Christine Aubin Khalifah, Marcel Jeannin, Stephanie McNamara, Mikel Mroué
FEBRUARY 26 – MARCH 30, 2008

"With Relative Good, Gow is clearly responding to today's disturbing political climate; but as a result of his radiant anger, he's also written a play with a significance that transcends international conditions." Zachary Pincus-Roth New York

Erring on the side of caution

On first glimpse of the dramatic stage setting, there’s the humming, clanking and flashing of siren lights, vertiginous staircases, upper-stage galleries and stark lower dungeons. Against this ‘Orwellian’ backdrop issues a decorous and elaborate styled language, a sort of modern-day Victoriana of bureaucratese. The complex narrative of ‘RELATIVE GOOD’ unfolds through a legal inspection of minutiae, hair-splitting details for which our century is notorious or renowned. It’s all part of a story that is Kafkaesque in its irrational logic, its various twists and turns, enacted at the Centaur stage by an excellent cast...

A midwinter’s hallucinogenic dream: farce, folly and the full moon

Perhaps it had something to do with the perfectly full moon, which was eclipsed to blood red by February 20th at ten of the clock. That might partly account for the hallucinogenic Shakespearean capers on the Mainline stage. If the old Bard wasn’t turning in his grave, he might have died a second time from laughing—or groaning. Is nothing sacred in the Kingdom of ART?

A Valentine Affair
Just in time for Valentine’s day, the intimate Geordie Theatre space in the heart of the Plateau offers up a funky stage setting created by Jennifer Sheshko. The action is enlivened by Tristan Capacchione’s dynamic sound design and the masterly shifting light effects of Chris O’Neill. Tableau d’Hôte’s most recent theatrical presentation, ‘The Elusive,’ begins with these stage-lights trained on a hermetic foursome of would-be lovers, poised to embark on a typically modern-day courtship ritual and battle dance...

Last week, I spent an hour or so at a local retirement home. Not something I often do, but for the novelty—this was a magically conjured ‘home for the aged,’ briefly claiming centre stage at Centaur Theatre. Some challenge! you may be thinking. I agree. Playwright, John Mighton has trained his dramatic focus on a mostly neglected theatrical theme: that twilit stage of life we are all rapidly or gradually approaching, nothing we might normally care to dwell on, I have to say...

A MainLine Theatre Production

Does the name ‘Hedda Gabler’ conjure up foggy recollections of rampant heroines, stylized fire-arms, sloppy college crib-notes on mystery and murder? This month, Montreal’s Mainline Theatre offers a modernist look at the classic Ibsen drama, fast-forwarded to 1950s suburbia...
